Financial Literacy classes
To turn your financial problems around, you must understand your flow of income and expenses. This is commonly referred to as your budget. Some of us find the term “spending plan” a little less restrictive. The Birmingham Homeownership Center can help!
The Birmingham Homeownership Center offers Free Financial Literacy classes. We can help you take simple and effective steps to improve your credit, and that can put you back in the driver’s seat with your budget or spending plan.
Classes are held from 8:00AM-5:00PM on Fridays at the center located at 4117 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35222. Each class has representatives from the Center and partners in the community. Registration is required. Please register by calling The Birmingham Homeownership Center at 205.591.7500.
First Time Homebuyers:
Buying a home is a matter of making decisions. Free consulting and homebuyer training, led by a professional counseling and lending staff, allow you to obtain the information you need. Our First Time Homebuyer workshops include valuable information on:
Mortgage Loan Process
Real Estate Agents
Home Inspection
Home Appraisal
Contract information
Making an offer
These classes are included with our Financial Literacy classes and take place from 8:00AM-5:00PM on Fridays at the center. All classes are held at the Birmingham Homeownership Center located at 4117 2nd Avenue South. Registration is required for all classes. Please call 205.591.7500 to register.
Foreclosure Prevention Counseling:
If you are having difficulty in making your mortgage payments, we recommend the following:
Call your lender to negotiate arrangements to avoid further delinquency.
Consider all financial resources to pull from to make the next month’s payment.
Read all your mail from your lender.

Foreclosure prevention clinics are held every Tuesday at the Center, from 4:00PM-6:00PM. You can meet one-on-one with a counselor to discuss the cause of their delinquency (hardship), budget , options to avoid foreclosure, the foreclosure process, and what our “action plan” will be.
Our certified counselors are highly skilled at negotiating with lenders for the most affordable option to assist in avoiding foreclosure.
Some documentation to bring with you to our workshops includes the following:
Closing documents (legal documents when you bought your house)
HUD 1 Settlement statement
Mortgage
Note
Two recent mortgage statements
Verification of Income (Month’s worth of pay stubs, Award Letters for Unemployment or SSI)
Hardship Letter
Any correspondence from Lawyer’s Offices. (information regarding foreclosure process or Bankruptcy)
